PlaNYC was developed in 2007 in an effort to address areas such as air quality and carbon reduction in New York City. The School Construction Authority supports PlaNYC initiatives, including the conversion of schoolyards to playgrounds and the conversion of boiler systems that burn #4 fuel oil.
One of the goals of the PlaNYC program is to ensure that New Yorkers live within a 10-minute walk of a park. The School Construction Authority works closely with the Department of Parks to identify schoolyards that are appropriate for conversion to playgrounds. The conversion of schoolyards to playgrounds increases community access to green, open spaces.
Boilers in our school buildings that use #4 fuel oil must convert to using clean fuel by 2030. The School Construction Authority allocates funding in our Capital Plan for the conversion of boiler systems in our schools.
