Summer/Winter Sheepshead Bay is a site-specific artwork created by Matthew Brandt for the new PS 206 Addition, Brooklyn. The glass installation depicts a shimmering photographic panorama of Sheepshead Bay that fills a horizontal band along the upper portion of the lobby. To create the artwork, Brandt photographed the channel and its surroundings over multiple visits and in different seasons. He then combined these images into a continuous landscape that transitions from fall to winter and from spring to summer, highlighting the bay as a year-round source of life for the community.

Brandt’s artwork highlights the unique intersection of nature and urban life in the channel. The mouth of the bay anchors the waterscape composition, where people on boats, jet ski and other watercraft share the water with ducks and swans, while seagulls circle overhead. Along the shoreline, figures populate the boardwalk with a narrow band of low-rise buildings stretching across the background. A thin veil of watery iridescence flows over the image, like the rainbowed film of a bubble. Brandt created this effect by applying a solvent to the photographic surface. It gives the scene a fluid, shifting quality that adds to the feeling of motion, compelling the viewer to move through the space and experience the artwork from different vantage points within the lobby and from outside

Brandt captures the bay as the heart of the community, its waters shaping daily routines and seasonal rhythms that define life in this neighborhood. The same currents mirror students’ school journeys, reflecting the constant movement, discovery and growth at the core of elementary education. “Water serves as a central metaphor for the ever-changing nature of learning,” says Brandt. “It suggests patience and calm, akin to the soothing presence of water, while symbolizing endurance and resilience."
