Michael Murphy, Believe and Suceed, 2026, stainless steel, HS @ Q497, Queens
Believe and Succeed is a site-specific artwork created by Michael Murphy for the lobby of the new HS @ Q497, Queens. Suspended above the vestibule, the installation consists of 800 baseball-sized stainless steel orbs that form a shimmering constellation. The orbs reflect natural light, their surroundings, and even the viewers themselves, giving the artwork a constantly shifting, dynamic quality. Their floating forms draw the eye upward and invite students to move through the space.
When viewed from various angles, the orbs begin to organize into patterns of alignment. Using precise geometry and engineering, Murphy designed specific vantage points where, as if by magic, hidden messages appear. From one location, the spheres align to reveal the word BELIEVE; from another, the same cluster aligns to spell SUCCEED.
The artwork rewards curiosity and careful observation by creating an active, participatory experience. Its affirming messages encourage students to meet challenges with determination and celebrate their achievements. Murphy hopes his artwork will “inspire all who encounter it to believe in themselves and strive for greatness, knowing that with dedication and perseverance, success is within reach.”
